Our bodies don’t always know the difference between the fear of life threatening danger, and the fear of change.
So when trying to shift long standing (often emotional) diet or lifestyle habits, our stress response system can get jacked and resistance shows up.
This might play out as struggle to follow through with your plan to…
…cut out sugar
…establish an earlier bedtime
…make it to that yoga class
or it might show up as self talk like…
…”it’ll never work”
…”it’s too hard”
…”I’ve tried this before and nothing changed, so why bother?”
This is legitimately frustrating and confusing…
…because – even if we deeply desire reaching our goals and stepping outside of our comfort zones – these messages can feel so strong in the body and stop us from following through.
It helps to consider… 1. this is common – you’re not alone, and 2. these signs of resistance are hints that you may need to come at this desired change from a new and kinder way.
Rather than white knuckling a habit shift, or judging yourself for “not following through” – it can be helpful to…
…PAUSE and turn inward
…spend time deep breathing
…notice how you feel in your body when you contemplate making your desired change
…breathe into any areas of resistance
This is the body holding onto “no” feelings about making this shift. Breathe into those feelings. Then ask your heart to show you what “yes” feels like.
Spending time in “yes” sensations can begin to shift feelings of fear and resistance and allow more space for possibility.
Use the above video as a place to start, and consider adding this practice into your life on a regular basis. ♡
P.S. It’s important to note: if the fear you’re working through involves a major trauma, it’s a good idea to have a trained support person to guide you through it.
